This research explores the development of memory in 6- to 10-year-olds, including children both with and without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We are interested in investigating how children self-reflect about their memories (called metacognition) and how this guides their decision-making.
What happens during the study?
In this study, your child will learn Japanese Kanji symbols! Your child will complete a game on a tablet assessing memory and cognition and a parent will fill out questionnaires about their child. The study is held as one 30-minute session with a researcher taking place in the Cognitive Development Lab on the UCCS campus. We also have some collaborations that occur at clinics and child care sites. Families will receive a $10 electronic gift card to a major retailer of their choice (Target, Starbucks, Amazon, etc.). Children will receive prizes throughout the study session and a science participation certificate.
Who is eligible?
Children must be between the ages of 6- to 10-years-old, speak and understand English, be able to withstand a 30-minute task, and not present oppositional defiant behaviors. Children with and without an ADHD diagnosis are eligible.
What are the risks and benefits?
This study is meant for researchers to learn more about how memory and learning strategies develop throughout childhood, as well as within neurodivergent populations (i.e., children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). There are minimal risks associated with participating in this study. Participants may feel bored or frustrated if they do not know the answer to a question.
How can I participate?
To participate, please fill out the form below or you can email us at cogdev@uccs.edu. We will contact you with a few screening questions to ensure your child is eligible to participate and then provide you with the link to consent to the study and schedule your study session. Both weekday and weekend times are available for sessions. If you received a flyer through your clinic or childcare center, please use the QR code on the flyer to sign up.
